New amenities, cuisine

Last November, MaineGeneral opened the $312 million Alfond Center for Health in Augusta. It has changed how people perceive hospitals, in part by offering a range of amenities, including healthy dining, yoga and wellness classes and park-like grounds. Here’s how the amenities might have compared to the average hospital in 1994.

A 1994 hospital:

• Cafeteria serving Jell-O squares

• Vending machines

• Bank of pay phones

• Smoking in designated areas

2014 MaineGeneral Alfond Center for Health amenities:

• Private labor rooms with whirlpool tubs

• Main Steet Café

• Renew! Shop for Women with health-related items

• Yoga, Tai Chi, meditation

• Classes on healthy eating and cooking

• Gift shop with jewelry and clothing, as well as magazines, cards, candy
