The Maine House on Wednesday rejected a bill to change the work permit process for minors and allow children younger than 16 years old to work in bowling alleys or movie theaters.
The Associated Press reported opponents of the bill criticized it as an effort to weaken child labor laws and cut out school superintendents from the work permitting process by allowing minors younger than 16 to request work permits directly through the Maine Department of Labor when school isn’t in session. The bill failed in the House in an 85-58 vote.
