Housing for BIW shipbuilders, Navy workers slated for 2027 completion

Developers Collaborative’s housing project for Bath Iron Works is well underway. Mike Lyne, director of commercial development for the Portland-based firm, said all three buildings at 150 Congress Ave. in Bath are framed and roughed in.

The project broke ground last October.

The Ways will provide 84 market-rate apartments for rent to shipbuilders and Navy personnel. Any additional capacity will be offered to the public.

The apartments will be a mix of studios and one- and two-bedroom units, located a short walk or bike ride from BIW’s main shipyard and downtown Bath.

South Portland-based Optimum Construction is the project contractor. Developers Collaborative will own and manage the apartments, which are expected to be completed in April 2027.

The development is among several initiatives supported by $34 million in U.S. Navy funding, awarded in 2024.
