A Portland nonprofit has proposed redeveloping the Cony Flatiron Building in Augusta as commercial and performing arts space.
Housing Initiatives of New England President Cindy Taylor recently met with city councilors to pitch the plan, according to the Capital Weekly. The nonprofit would buy the building, formerly part of Cony High School, for $1 and turn it into a restaurant, offices or housing, as well as a theater for performing arts. Housing Initiatives, which previously converted the old Augusta City Hall into assisted-living apartments, is the only developer that has expressed interest in the flatiron building, even after two requests for bids.
Taylor said it would take the nonprofit eight months to develop a business plan. She is expected to meet again with the council later this month.
