The Maine Human Rights Commission ruled that there is reason to believe the owners of Day’s Jewelers created a hostile work environment for a Native American employee because of his race, Maine Public Broadcasting Network reported Tuesday.
The commission upheld an investigator’s findings that the company subjected the employee, Jason Brown, who had worked for nearly seven years in several positions, to pejorative terms and offensive images.
The attorney for Day’s Jewelers, which has six retail stores in Maine and New Hampshire and employs more than 100 workers, said Brown’s employers had a great relationship with him and that the complaints are “at worst, a misunderstanding.”
The two parties will meet to reach a possible remedy, but if no agreement is reached, the matter may have to be settled in court.
