Following the relocation of Icelandic shipping company Eimskip’s American headquarters to Portland, the leader of Iceland will visit Maine next month to speak during Maine International Trade Center’s Trade Day.
The Portland Press Herald reported Iceland President Ólafur Ragnar GrÃmsson will speak during the May 31 event about business opportunities that might be created as global warming shrinks the polar ice cap.
GrÃmsson is expected to talk about how that melting will open access to iron ore, gas and oil and open transpolar shipping routes that could drastically reduce shipping time between Europe and Asia.
Attendance for the day’s events, speakers and workshops is open to the public at a cost of $75 for MITC members and $95 for non-members.
