Nearly two years after Ziggi's Coffee abruptly closed its Saco location, the shop is set to make a comeback under new ownership.
The location has been vacant since October 2024, when the Colorado-based coffee chain's only Maine location closed after just seven months in business.
James Barrett, who is entering the franchise business for the first time, told Mainebiz that he was drawn to both the Ziggi's Coffee concept and the growing Saco community when the opportunity to purchase the property became available.
Mark Anderson and Karen Rich, from Malone Commercial Brokers, brokered the deal.
Barrett said the property's location along U.S. Route 1, coupled with continued commercial and residential growth in the area, made it an attractive investment.
"We love the Ziggi's concept and the Saco area," said Barrett. "We knew many locals missed the store and wanted to reopen and start serving the community again."
Ziggi's is scheduled to reopen on June 30.
No major renovations are planned, but Barrett said the focus has been on refreshing and sprucing up the existing building.
"Engaging with the community and providing great food and service" will be the key to the business's success moving forward, Barrett said.
The coffee shop will host a week of grand-opening promotions, featuring a different deal each day as well as a fundraising event.
History of the Saco location
Ziggi’s Coffee opened its first and only Maine store on Feb. 20, 2024, at 3 Waterfall Drive in Saco, near the Scarborough town line.

The coffee shop was newly constructed and broke ground in September 2023. The building is 1,000 square feet. The shop had a drive-thru, walk-up windows and seasonal outdoor seating.
Ziggi’s Coffee shops are independently owned and operated by a network of franchisees.
About the franchise
Ziggi’s Coffee was founded in 2004 by Brandon and Camrin Knudsen in Longmont, Colo., north of Denver. The business has since grown into a drive-thru and coffeehouse chain. The company reportedly has around 126 locations across 20 states.
Elsewhere in Saco, coffee shops are abundant and include Starbucks, Dunkin’, and two Aroma Joe’s locations, one of which opened in the same area two months after Ziggi's closed in 2024.
