Holyoke, Mass.-based ISO New England, which operates the region’s bulk power system and wholesale electricity markets, has set out its plan for upgrades and additional resources it says will be needed to maintain a reliable supply of electricity in New England through 2021.
After a round of upgrades throughout the region that were identified in April — including $1.4 billion of work on Central Maine Power Co.’s network — ISO stated in a press release that the region should have the capacity to meet demand through at least 2015.
ISO New England projects in its latest report that the greatest need for transmission upgrades will be seen in the expanding regions of southwest Connecticut, Boston and northwest Vermont. Based on requirements in five New England states that set renewable power generation levels, ISO New England projects that 31.8% of the region’s energy supply will come from renewable sources by 2021.
