In a surprise move, Gov. Janet Mills announced Thursday morning that she is dropping out of the race for a U.S. Senate seat.
Mills, who made the announcement Thursday on social media said a lack of campaign funding drove the decision.
“While I have the drive and passion, commitment and experience, and above all else — the fight — to continue on, I very simply do not have the one thing that political campaigns unfortunately require today: the financial resources,” she posted.
“That is why today I have made the incredibly difficult decision to suspend my campaign for the United States Senate.”
Mills would have faced Graham Platner in the Democratic primary in June.
With Mills out of the race, Platner moves into the clear frontrunner spot to face the incumbent, U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in the Nov. 3 general election.
