Judge: City can sell Cony High School site

The city of Augusta got approval Tuesday to sell the former Cony High School site to make way for a supermarket there.

Ending a four-year legal battle, a judge in Kennebec County Superior Court said the city could sell the nearly seven-acre site for $1.5 million to the Boulos Co., which plans to build an environmentally-friendly Hannaford Bros. on the property. The city agreed to sell the property to Boulos in March 2004, but the sale has been in dispute since then because of a century-old requirement that the site be used for educational purposes, Stephen Langsdorf, a PretiFlaherty attorney representing the city, told Mainebiz this morning.

The court decision this week allows the city to alter the requirement, sell the property to Boulos and direct the proceeds to an educational outlet, Langsdorf said.
