A Maine professional driver has just returned home as one of the best truck drivers in America.
Winthrop-based FedEx driver Bob Cochran took first place in the “straight truck” class at the 2026 National Truck Driving Championships, a competition often described as the Super Bowl of safety. It was held in Pittsburgh.
Drivers are tested with a written examination, pre-trip inspection and a skills course designed to test their driving safety and precision, according to a press release.
Cochran has been a professional driver for nearly four decades and has logged two million safe-driving miles.
He has competed at the national championships nine times and qualified for this year’s competition after taking top honors at the Maine Truck Driving Championships, which was held in May in Hermon.
Cochran’s most unusual delivery might have been a five-clawed lobster, which he transported to the Maine Department of Marine Resources in Boothbay Harbor.
