🔒Kennebec Savings adds rooftop atrium to Augusta building plan

With the timetable for construction on Kennebec Savings Bank’s new Augusta headquarters pushed back slightly to October, the bank has made some tweaks to its plans. The five-story structure, expected to cost between $14 million and $19 million to build, will now include a top-floor glass atrium that will serve as a break room for all staff members, Andrew Silsby, the bank’s president and CEO, told Mainebiz. “We'd like to give our employees the best views from the new building of the capital and the river,” he said. “The HVAC equipment needs to go on the top floor and it is typical to put structure up around that, just so you don’t have a clear view of all that equipment, so we decided to enlarge that structure to include the break room," he added. Updated renderings are included in documents filed with the city ahead of the next scheduled Planning Board meeting on Tuesday, July 14. Silsby confirmed that the project is on the agenda. The project also now needs to be reviewed by the Maine Department of Transportation, pushing the construction timeline back slightly due to the agency’s review deadline, he said. Ironically, the delay has allowed the bank “a little extra time to relook at some of the interior plans and make some adjustments,” Silsby said. “The breakroom on the top floor is a great example of the outcome of having a little extra time.” Lajoie Brothers Construction, of Augusta, is the contractor, while Platz Associates, of Auburn, is the architect. Keith Luke, Augusta’s economic development director, said the building project bodes well for the city’s economy. “Seeing construction cranes in the sky is an important measure of success in economic development, and this KSB project will certainly do that here in Augusta,” he told Mainebiz. With $1.8 billion in assets as of June 30, 2025, Kennebec Savings was ranked No. 10 among Maine-based banks in the 2026 Mainebiz Book of Lists.
