Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the University of Maine have signed an agreement to expand research opportunities and strengthen the pipeline of engineers, scientists and other skilled workers.
UMaine students will be able to work with shipyard experts on real-world science, technology, engineering and mathematics projects. The shipyard will benefit from collaborations with faculty while recruiting potential employees.
“Portsmouth Naval Shipyard’s ability to support the nation has always depended on the talent, innovation and dedication of its workforce,” acting shipyard Commander Cmdr. Mills said in a statement.
“This Educational Partnership Agreement with the University of Maine strengthens our connection to the next generation of engineers, scientists and skilled professionals who will help shape the future of our mission. By working together, we create opportunities for students, faculty and shipyard employees to share knowledge, advance research and develop the workforce needed to support the Navy’s mission for years to come.”
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, based in Kittery, is one of four such Navy-operated facilities in the country and the second-oldest, founded in 1800. It has more than 6,000 civilian employees.
