Maine Fence employees who recently lost their jobs will receive help from the federal Trade Adjustment Assistance program, Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins announced yesterday.
The Pittsfield fence company, which employed more than 100 workers about 10 years ago, shaved its crew down to just three during its final round of lay-offs in August. About 14 workers lost their jobs. Business had been dwindling as plastic fencing has become more popular, according to company President Barry Bishop.
The purpose of the TAA program is to aid workers who lose their jobs because of increased foreign imports. The former Maine Fence workers will be eligible for employment training, income support, job search allowance, and relocation services.
