Two third-year students at the University of Maine School of Law in Portland are garnering national attention for representing fellow Maine college students in a battle over illegal file sharing.
Lisa Chmelecki and Hannah Ames are defending two Maine college students who have been sued by the Recording Industry Association of America for copyright infringement, the Portland Press Herald reported. The two law students argue that digital information used by the recording industry to identify those college students who share copyrighted music does not meet legal standards set by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Chmelecki and Ames were assigned to the case through the law school’s legal aid clinic, which provides representation to low-income Maine residents.
