Lawmakers back gas tax hike

Lawmakers will consider an 11-cent-per-gallon increase in the gas tax to help fund road repair, after the transportation committee approved the proposal without Republican support.

The committee voted 9-4 in favor of the bill, with four of the five Republican members voting against it, according to the Portland Press Herald. The tax hike originally was part of the highway budget bill, but legislative leaders wanted the proposal as a separate bill, the paper reported. Maine’s current tax on gasoline is 28.4 cents per gallon and 29.6 cents for diesel.

The bill would also eliminate the current highway funding system, which ties the gas tax to the rate of inflation. Proponents of the bill are looking new ways to boost gas tax revenues because fuel consumption is down and the cost of construction materials has increased.

That’s a brilliant idea, let’s raise the gas tax by $.11 and now have a $.406 per gallon tax, and we will have the 2nd highest gas tax in the nation second only to NY. I live close enough to NH and I will NEVER buy another gallon of gas in this state. NH’s gas tax is $.19. So by driving across the border you will save $.22/per gallon at least!

how much more in this economic downfall does the state of maine elected officials expect from the tax payers. They have a lot of nerve to favor this tax when people in the state can barely afford to pay for food and now this added tax will only add to the increase of all the items we purchase . BOOT THEM ALL TO THE CURB AND SEE WHERE THAT LEAVES THEM
