The Legislature has given preliminary approval to a new union of nearly 2,200 state-licensed child care workers.
Both the Senate and the House of Representatives yesterday passed a bill that recognizes the family child care providers’ union and authorizes negotiations between the state and the union, starting July 1, 2009, according to the Associated Press. The measure will allow child care businesses to negotiate with the state over training, rules and regulations. The bill faces a final round of votes, the AP said.
Child care workers in October voted to form the union under the Maine State Employees Association, part of the Service Employees International Union, according to the AP.
