Lee Academy in Lee will form three more satellite high schools in China, with five more possibly in the works for South Korea.
Last April, the private academy created the first American high school on the Chinese mainland in Wuhun, which will open in February. The school is branching out internationally at a time when most Maine schools are shrinking in budget and population, and is taking advantage of China’s global economic ambitions, according to the Bangor Daily News.
Headmaster Bruce Lindberg said that the new Chinese schools will help the academy fund a $2 million renovation of the Maine campus.
