Gov. Paul LePage is questioning whether a $65 million bond is the right solution to develop more senior housing in Maine.
The Associated Press reported that the bond, proposed by House Speaker Mark Eves, would support the development of 1,000 energy-efficient senior housing units in all 16 counties — a measure advocates said would address a housing shortage and generate new jobs.
However, LePage said Maine shouldn’t borrow more money “at the expense of all Maine taxpayers” and should instead “refocus existing resources,” noting that the Maine State Housing Authority has the ability to issue housing bonds.
