Glidden Point Oyster Farm, which owns one operation in Edgecomb, plans to expand by purchasing a second farm and a retail outlet for its products, the Boothbay Register reported.
Ryan McPherson, representing Glidden Point during a recent Edgecomb Planning Board meeting, indicated he would apply for a commercial permit to allow him to sell other products not produced on his farm as well.
The company operates along the Damariscotta River. It is one of about 65 oyster farms in Maine extending from York to Washington counties raising tens of millions of oysters per year for the white table cloth market, according to the Maine Aquaculture Innovation Association.
Oyster culture has broadened throughout the state, attracting new entrants like lobsterman Jon Rogers, who has an eight-acre oyster farm off Orr’s Island in Harpswell. Many newcomers are from the marine trades, especially commercial fishermen who are attracted to the supplemental income.
