The federal government has awarded a $256,696 emergency grant to the Maine Department of Labor to expand services in response to layoffs announced in December at Lincoln Paper and Tissue in Lincoln.
U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud said in a statement that the funding aims to help around 100 workers at the mill who were among 200 people furloughed in December in response to a boiler explosion and increasing foreign competition.
The U.S. Department of Labor in January agreed that foreign competition was a factor in the layoffs, certifying the company’s request for job retraining assistance for its workers. The federal emergency funding aims to boost state and local work force resources in cases of sudden layoffs or other job losses.
