Maine’s lobster industry is pursuing certification from an international nonprofit organization that would label it as sustainable.
Gov. John Baldacci in late February created an informal task force to head up the process to obtain a sustainable certification from London-based Marine Stewardship Council, in response to a number of large food retailers like Wal-Mart and Whole Foods vowing only to sell sustainable-certified seafood, according to a press release from the governor’s office.
The certification process will take eight months to complete, according to the release.
