Maine landed the third-most valuable seafood catch in the country in 2012, attributed mostly to the value of its lobster.
A report released Wednesday from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration showed Maine’s $448 million in seafood landings trailed the first-place Alaska’s $1.7 billion catch and Massachusetts’ $618 million catch.
By weight, Maine lagged many other coastal states, including Oregon, Virginia and Mississippi.
Within the state, the report indicates Stonington was the top Maine port for the value of its seafood landings, which stood at $46 million last year. The Associated Press reported that nearly all of the port’s catch is lobsters. Portland had the most landings by weight, but was second-highest by value.
