National Coffee Day arrives Tuesday with something coffee drinkers can get behind: free coffee and rewards at several major chains.
It’s an annual marketing opportunity for coffee shops and a chance for consumers to try a cup on the house.
The promotion started in 2005 and gained wider recognition in 2009, when the Southern Food and Beverage Museum in New Orleans designated Sept. 29 as Coffee Day to kick off the city’s first coffee festival.
About 66% of American adults drink coffee every single day. The U.S. consumes roughly 500 million cups of coffee daily, outranking tea, soft drinks and juice in daily consumption, according to the National Coffee Association.
Here’s what some chains are offering Tuesday:
- Aroma Joe’s: Anyone can get a free 16-ounce hot or iced coffee at participating locations. Rewards members can get a free 24-ounce hot or iced coffee reward redeemable Sept. 29 through Oct. 6.
- Dunkin’ rewards members can get a free medium hot or iced coffee with any purchase made through the app on Tuesday.
- Ziggi’s Coffee: Rewards members can stretch National Coffee Day into a weeklong celebration. From Sept. 29 through Oct. 5, members can get a free small daily brew, iced coffee, or cold brew with the purchase of another qualifying menu item costing at least $2.50. The rewards program is free to join, and new members can use the offer the same day they sign up.
- Starbucks: Starbucks rewards members can earn 100 bonus points when they purchase any size or style of brewed, hot, or iced coffee.
Local coffee shops have not widely posted their National Coffee Day offerings yet. Check your favorite shop’s social media accounts on Tuesday for any last-minute deals or promotions.
