Maine car sales slip

The number of car sales and car dealerships in Maine is decreasing in the face of high gas prices and a weak economy.

Maine car dealers sold 17,759 cars during the first five months of 2008, 9% fewer than were sold during the same period last year, according to the Associated Press, quoting figures provided by Albin, Randall & Bennett, an accounting firm with offices in Portland and Auburn that tracks car sales in the state.

The number of Maine car dealerships also dropped — from 136 in May 2007 to 132 in May 2008.
