Maine fishermen get $1.6M in disaster aid

The Maine groundfishing industry is receiving a major boost with $1.6 million in federal disaster aid after a particularly tumultuous season last year.

The Portland Press Herald reported 50 Maine fishermen will receive $32,500 each as part of a $32.8 million disbursement of federal disaster funds to New York and New England based on an agreement reached between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the six states.

The state Department of Marine Resources on June 18 is slated to discuss how to use an additional $636,000 disbursement.
