The College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor topped the list of the Princeton Review’s seventh-annual edition of the “Top 50 Green Colleges of 2016.”
Colby College was the one other college in Maine that make the top 50 ranking at No. 23, which is based on data from Princeton Review’s 2015-16 survey of 640 four-year colleges across the country and their commitments to sustainability and environmental efforts.
The College of the Atlantic was lauded for green efforts that include it becoming the first carbon-neutral college in 2007; its ownership and upkeep of 300 acres of forest and farmland, which it uses for education and research; and its commitment to becoming a fossil fuel-free campus by 2050.
The “Top 50 Green Colleges” are part of a larger, unranked list of the top green colleges in the country that also included Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Unity College in Unity and The University of Maine in Orono.
