Maine joins EPA suit

Maine is joining a California lawsuit against the United States Environmental Protection Agency to protect states’ rights to regulate car emissions.

Maine Attorney General Steven Rowe yesterday said Maine joined California and 15 other states in the suit, according to the Associated Press. The states are appealing the EPA’s decision not to give California a waiver from federal regulations on auto emissions.

California had hoped to impose stricter laws on emissions than the federal government. The EPA on Dec. 19 said granting the waiver would have resulted in a patchwork of individual state laws, rather than a comprehensive nationwide law, the AP said.
