Medical marijuana sales in Maine increased 30% to more than $16 million in 2014, according to data from Maine Revenue Services.
The Lewiston Sun Journal reported that the sales from Maine’s eight dispensaries generated $892,885 in sales tax last year. Medical marijuana generated $14.2 million in sales and $636,986 in sales tax for 2013. The numbers don’t include figures from the state’s 1,200 licensed caregivers.
Paul McCarrier, president of marijuana advocacy group Legalize Maine, told the Sun Journal that he estimates around 15,500 to 17,000 people are now certified to use medical marijuana, an increase from an estimated 13,000 in 2013.
