An exhibit of paintings by a Maine native that opened in New York City last week is getting some additional promotion from the Maine Office of Tourism.
State tourism officials were at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to promote Maine’s cultural heritage.
The occasion was the opening of “Marsden Hartley’s Maine” exhibit in New York this week to promote Maine’s cultural heritage, and a related show at Bates College.
This major exhibition presented by The Metropolitan Museum of Art at The Met Breuer location in New York will run from March 15 through June 18. It was reviewed favorably by the New York Times last week.
The show will move to the Colby College Museum of Art, from July 8 to Nov. 12.
Hartley was born in Lewiston in 1877 and though he traveled extensively and lived elsewhere for part of his life, he spent a great deal of time painting Maine scenes, from Katahdin to Old Orchard Beach. He died in 1943.

“Marsden Hartley’s Maine” was organized by Elizabeth Finch of the Colby College Museum of Art; Donna M. Cassidy, a professor at the University of Southern Maine; and Randall R. Griffey of the Met.
