The Maine School of Science and Mathematics in Limestone has hired Valerie Chavez as its first community programs manager, a new position created to expand the school’s educational programming and partnerships across Maine.
The Maine School of Science and Mathematics is a statewide STEM-focused high school that offers an advanced college-preparatory curriculum.
Chavez joined the school’s residential life staff last year after graduating from UCLA.
In her new role, she will identify educational needs across the state, build partnerships and develop STEM programming. One of her priorities will be reimagining the school’s summer STEM program for middle school students.
“I am excited to step into this role and help expand MSSM’s impact across Maine,” said Chavez. “I look forward to building partnerships that connect MSSM to the broader community and to creating educational opportunities for our students and Maine youth.”
The position was funded through a $100,000 grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation, which requires the school to raise an additional $100,000 in matching donations. MMG Insurance in Presque Isle has committed $15,000 toward the match.

The matching component of the grant also allows us to engage potential donors with the opportunity to make this possible and grow our community’s culture of philanthropy.”
