2026 Goals

• In the 2024 comprehensive plan, the Mission renews its commitment to thriving island and coastal communities through partnership, community building, health care, and education.

• Refresh how the Mission serves island and Downeast coastal communities of Maine while reinforcing the vital familiar services that our communities continue to depend on.

Fundraising events/Opportunities

Sunbeam Award Gala – Taking place each August in Bar Harbor, our signature fundraising event honors organizations and individuals making a positive impact in our communities. Past recipients include artist and author Ashley Bryan, Mount Desert Island Hospital, Sunrise County Economic Council, Maine Community Foundation, Rossi Foundation, Maine CDC, Acadia Senior College, Island Institute, Ruth and Tristram Colket, Former Maine State Sen. Hon. Jill M. Goldthwait, Earl Bechlin and Alan Baker, and Sigma Kappa.

Giving Opportunities

The Mission Fund – Gifts and grants provide operating or project support for mission programs.

The Hope Society – Including the Mission in estate plans provides critical support and hope for generations to come.

Corporate Sponsorship – Become a sponsor for our organization and create a customized package to best fit your organization’s goals.

Volunteer Opportunities

Mount Desert Island – Historical archives, Sunbeam and islands, events, and Christmas Program.

Downeast – Housing Improvement Service Tours; mentorship of high school students in the Journey and Christmas programs; and Food Security program opportunities such as food deliveries to seniors, assistance in the Mission’s food pantry, and community meal preparation.

Mission Statement

Rooted in a history of compassionate service and mutual trust, the Mission seeks to strengthen coastal and island communities by educating youth, supporting families, and promoting good health.

Service locations

The Mission delivers services across a 9,500 square-mile area that includes Maine’s unbridged islands and Washington County, which combined more than 90,000 Mainers call home.
