More than a decade after helping get the Maine Sports Commission off the ground, Sheila Brennan Nee plans to retire as strategic director at the end of the year, the nonprofit announced.
Brennan Nee, a native of Foxborough, Mass., and lifelong New England sports fan, helped establish the commission in 2012 alongside leaders from the Maine Office of Tourism and the state’s education, sports and tourism sectors.
As strategic director since 2015, Brennan Nee has played a central role in building partnerships with government, industry and community leaders to attract and support sporting events that bring athletes, families and visitors to communities across the state.
“Sheila’s passion for Maine, her deep understanding of our communities and her unmatched relationships across sports, tourism and economic development have been invaluable to the Maine Sports Commission,” said Russell Walters, a former Maine Sports Commission board chair and founding board member.
“Through her work, sports have become an important way for people to discover Maine and experience communities they might not otherwise have known,” he added.
Asked about her post-retirement plans, Brennan Nee told Mainebiz that she’s interested in keeping her hand in Maine sports and is open to a part-time opportunity if it’s the right fit.
“My plan is to enjoy adventures, mostly with family and friends, coast to coast, and have more time taking in our Maine lifestyle,” she said.
