Aiming to reduce crashes caused by distracted driving, the Maine Turnpike Authority is joining an international awareness campaign urging motorists to stay focused behind the wheel.
The “Put Your Mind in Drive” campaign, held during the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association’s Global Road Safety Week, promotes attentive driving and highlights the role transportation agencies play in protecting motorists, road workers and communities through operations, technology, communication and public education.
Each year, the association partners with organizations around the world to amplify the campaign’s message and encourage safer roads for all.
The 2024 Maine Driver Awareness Survey Report found that 10% of drivers reported sometimes, nearly always or always texting on a handheld cell phone while driving.
According to the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, distracted driving contributes to about 3,400 crashes in Maine each year, resulting in roughly 500 injuries and 45 fatalities.
“Our crews — whether on the road or behind the scenes — show up every day to keep travelers safe. We ask drivers to do the same: stay focused behind the wheel and make driving your only task while on the road,” said Andre Briere, executive director of the Maine Turnpike Authority.
“With summer traffic picking up, we’re reminding everyone that staying alert and attentive to the road ahead is one of the simplest ways to keep yourself and others safe,” he added.
As part of Global Road Safety Week, the Maine Turnpike Authority is highlighting several local roadway safety initiatives, including a social media campaign that shares reminders promoting safer, more attentive driving.
The daily posts feature state and national data showing how widespread distracted driving is and its impact on Maine communities.
Safety pledge
The Maine Turnpike Authority is also encouraging employees, partners and community members to take the IBTTA’s online “Be Safe Together” pledge and commit to safer, more attentive driving habits.
Those who take the pledge commit to staying focused, following safe driving practices, speaking up about unsafe driving and leading by example.
