Maine businesses will save approximately $30 million in unemployment insurance taxes in 2016 thanks to a lower unemployment insurance tax rate.
The Maine Department of Labor released the 2016 unemployment insurance tax rate schedule last week, saying the drop represents about a 21% decrease in unemployment taxes paid per employee.
Less people receiving unemployment benefits and job growth led to the lower rate, Gov. Paul LePage said in a statement.
Maine’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 4.4% in September, lower than it’s been since April 2006, according to the Associated Press.
