Maine consumers are holding off on major purchases amid ongoing anxiety over the national economy, a new survey has found.
In a consumer confidence survey released Tuesday by Market Decisions of Portland, 47% of respondents said now is a bad time to make a significant purchase, falling short of a peak of 63% in 2008 but higher than the last two quarters. The percentage of Mainers who said they are worse off than one year ago held steady at 43%, while 58% expect bad economic times in the next five years.
The survey interviewed 400 Maine residents aged 18 and older from July 13-30, with a margin of error of about 5 percentage points.
