With no public comment or discussion among officials, Portland’s City Council took less than five minutes to unanimously approve a six-month moratorium on any stores, cultivation facilities, testing facilities or social clubs that sell marijuana for consumption, the Portland Press Herald reported.
As previously reported, with that vote, the city joins a growing number of municipalities, including Brewer, Gray, Bangor and Westbrook, in enacting similar moratoriums.
City staff told the Press Herald that the temporary ban will provide the city with additional time to understand the impact of legalizing recreational marijuana and to draft licensing rules and ordinances in regards to where the businesses can operate within the city.
