Maine’s unemployment numbers are at their lowest point since 2001 as the jobless rate hit 4.0% in December, due in part to a smaller number of people working or looking for work.
The national unemployment rate during that same period was at 5.0%.
According to The Bangor Daily News, the 4.0% unemployment rate is down from 5.5% reported by the Maine Department of Labor at the same time in 2014. The estimated total labor force in the state dropped 2.5% over the year, and for the first time in 17 years, the population of Maine that is employed dipped below the national average.
