Mass. files suit over NE fishing quotas

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley has filed a lawsuit against federal regulators in an effort to block drastic cuts to catch limits that went into effect May 1.

The Associated Press reported the lawsuit alleges the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration did not meet legal requirements to mitigate impacts of the cuts and that the administration based the catch reductions on flawed science.

The most extreme of those cuts is a 78% year-over-year cut to the cod catch, which fishermen have said will devastate the industry.
