Nearly $30 million in federal tax credits will fund the construction of 184 affordable housing units in six cities across the state.
MaineHousing announced earlier this week that the federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits will finance construction of privately owned rental apartments in Biddeford, Berwick, Ellsworth, Freeport, Lewiston and Portland, according to The Associated Press. MaineHousing Director Dale McCormick said the housing projects will create several hundred construction jobs.
About half of those units are reserved for seniors and the other half for families. Developer Szanton Co. told news channel WCSH 6 that the tax credits will allow the company to move forward with its proposal to turn part of Bates Mill in Lewiston into about 48 units. The company can now close on the property and begin construction.
