The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy has ranked Maine 19th on a list of states that use energy efficiency to improve their economies.
The Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit’s 2008 State Energy Efficiency Scorecard ranked states on their energy efficiency practices such as building code, transportation and land use policies, state-supported efficiency programs and financial incentives and support for research.
California, Connecticut and Oregon topped the list. At 19th, Maine was the lowest ranked New England state. The other New England states were ranked as follows: Vermont at 4; Massachusetts at 7; Rhode Island at 11; and New Hampshire at 18.
