Memorial Day weekend traffic on the Maine Turnpike dipped nearly 3% from last year, likely due to gas prices that hovered around $4 a gallon.
A total of 651,216 vehicles traveled on the turnpike from Friday through Monday, a decrease of 19,475 vehicles or 2.9% from last year, according to a press release from the Maine Turnpike Authority. The number of vehicles that passed through the York toll plaza over the weekend dropped 4.2% from 2007, according to the release.
Turnpike officials had predicted that high gas prices would keep traffic this year from exceeding the record 671,000 vehicles that traveled on the turnpike in 2007.
