South Portland is the best place to live in Maine, according to Money Magazine’s latest national scorecard.
The magazine zeroes in on the places in all 50 states that pair strong economic and educational performance with affordability, as well as convenience, safety and a pleasant way of life.
“South Portland’s defining vista is that of a beautiful rocky coastline,” the magazine says in its synopsis, highlighting Fort Preble that dates from the early 1800s, the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse and “countless boats moored in Portland Harbor.”
The write-up also says that the 25,799-population city with a median household income of $56,742 has become a major retail hub and boasts ultra-low unemployment with projected job growth of 4.61% by 2021.
Other New England towns that made the list are Colchester, Vt.; Nashua, N.H.; Waltham, Mass.; Manchester, Conn.; and Warwick, R.I.
