Should you move to the cloud?

IT analyst Cisco predicts nearly two-thirds of data will be processed in the cloud by 2016. If you’re considering the switch, here are some basic questions to ask:

  • Where does the data live? Knowing this is crucial not only for avoiding putting your data in an area prone to natural disasters but for making sure the facility housing your data is secure.
  • Is there redundant data backup? Having your own local backups is a good idea but any quality cloud service provider will have a clear strategy for managing their own risk of data loss.
  • If a data center is buying a network connection, where does that connection go? Not all cloud providers will have their own data networks. Assessing the integrity of that network is important.
  • What is protecting the data? See what kinds of resources the company is putting in — staff, technology and time — to protect your data.
  • Who has access to the data? Most data breaches are not caused by technology failures but by human error. Knowing who will interact with your data is critical.
