Mother Nature strains municipal plowing budgets

Public officials in southern Maine say this year’s icy winter has caused them to use more salt and sand than usual, putting a strain on their annual road-clearing budgets just halfway through the season.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the Maine Department of Transportation has already exceeded what it spends in a typical winter, largely due to icier conditions. The paper reported that officials interviewed in various southern Maine municipalities said they’ve used around two-thirds of their resources for road-clearing by early February.
