Maine State Housing Authority has started a limited-time program to help eligible homeowners pay their water and sewer bills.
The Maine Water Assistance Program assists residents who may have fallen behind or had difficulty paying their drinking water and wastewater bills. The program provides direct payments to water and sewer utilities on the customers’ behalf.
Households can apply for direct funds to reconcile past-due balances and prepay customer accounts. Households are eligible for a one-time payment to prevent disconnection, or to restore service, in addition to a one-time monetary benefit.
Income eligibility cand guidelines can be found on the Maine State Housing Authority’s website.
MSHA is an independent authority that addresses problems of unsafe, unsuitable, overcrowded and unaffordable housing. For more information or to request an application, contact the Department of Water Quality at (207) 992-4470.
