The 17,000-square-foot facility, to be located at 40 Waterville Commons Drive in a former Staples office supply store, is expected to open later this year.
ConvenientMD, an operator of 51 urgent care clinics in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, will expand its footprint in Maine with a facility in Waterville that will combine urgent and primary care under one roof.
The 17,000-square-foot facility, to be located at 40 Waterville Commons Drive in a former Staples office supply store, is expected to open later this year as the company’s first co-located health care facility.
“Expanding access to care in meaningful ways is a top priority for us,” said CEO Ray Wahl.
“With the launch of our first co-located Urgent Care clinic and Primary Care practice, we are responding to demand for both services in the greater Waterville area, with the intention of removing barriers to care such as long drive times for rural residents,” he added.
In addition to providing care for sudden illnesses and injuries, the Waterville urgent care clinic will offer on-site labs, electrocardiograms and X-rays for fast and accurate diagnoses.
Additional services include youth sports physicals, Department of Transportation physicals, vaccinations and employer health services.
After establishing itself as a leader in urgent care, ConvenientMD expanded into primary care in 2022 to address the growing need for more accessible, patient-centered health care.
ConvenientMD, based in Portsmouth N.H., is staffed by 1,252 employees in total, including 231 in Maine. It currently operates primary care practices in Bangor and Portland; and urgent care practices in Auburn, Augusta, Belfast, Brunswick, Ellsworth, Farmington, Portland, Saco, Sanford and Westbrook.
Prevention, wellness focus
ConvenientMD Primary Care aims to offer patients easier access to appointments, longer visits with providers, and personalized support focused on prevention, wellness and long-term health.
In addition to preventive and ongoing medical care, patient care teams help coordinate specialist referrals, medication management, and behavioral health support. ConvenientMD Primary Care currently operates practices in Bangor and Portland, along with three in New Hampshire.
“Access to primary care is one of the most urgent healthcare challenges facing communities like Waterville today,” said Kevin Curwick, ConvenientMD’s president of advanced primary care.
“Our primary care model is designed specifically to address that gap by offering convenient access, integrated services, and a patient-first experience that makes it easier for people to engage in their health,” he added. “We’re committed to being part of the solution and strengthening access for patients across the region.”
