NewPage mill to close temporarily

A temporary shutdown planned for next month at the NewPage mill in Rumford will affect 500 production workers and an unknown number of salaried works.

The paper mill will close from Sept. 22 to Oct. 6 for work on a co-generation turbine that has been planned for more than a year, according to the Sun Journal in Lewiston. The mill will not produce paper during the shutdown, and will fill orders using existing inventory.

The mill employs 500 production workers, 200 salaried workers and 300 maintenance workers. The maintenance workers will stay on during the shutdown, as will a skeleton crew of unspecified size. Mill management will know which employees will be affected late next week, a spokesman for the mill told the paper. No permanent lay-offs are expected.
