Five of Maine’s biggest daily newspapers plan to share articles and photos starting next week to compensate for declining newspaper revenues and shrinking numbers of reporters.
The Bangor Daily News, Lewiston Sun Journal, Kennebec Journal of Augusta, Morning Sentinel of Waterville and the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram have agreed to the content-sharing deal, the Kennebec Journal reported. The latter three papers are owned by Blethen Maine Newspapers and have experienced numerous rounds of layoffs in the past year.
Jeannine Guttman, editor and vice president of the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, said sharing stories will help newspapers compete more with television, radio and Internet news sources.
