Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent today said it has laid off 19 employees, slashed hours for 32 others and instituted other cost-saving measures to save more than $2 million, according to the Bangor Daily News.
CEO Martin Bernstein said in a statement that in addition to the layoffs, 18 open positions would not be filled, salaries would be frozen for one year and the hospital would institute a one-year pension furlough. The cuts, which are projected to save the hospital $2.47 million, were made to counter a drop in patients and a loss of key healthcare providers, the paper reported.
The hospital employs roughly 600 people.
